Aster
Chapter 6

Your customer's journey

You will never see these screens from your own app: they happen on your customer's phone. Knowing them lets you answer their questions at the counter, and that is often what decides whether they sign up.

The thing to remember Everything happens in the browser your customer already has. No app, no account, no password, no banking details.
1

They fill in two fields

A first name and a phone number. That is everything Aster asks, and it is deliberate: the less you collect, the less there is to protect.

The number acts as the identifier. It is what lets them find their card again if they change phone or clear their browsing history.

A legal point that protects you

Two consents, deliberately separate

This interface detail is not cosmetic: it is what keeps you compliant without having to think about it.

The required checkbox

Keeping the first name and number so the card can work. Without this box ticked, no card is created. That is what Quebec's Law 25 requires, and the consent is timestamped.

The optional checkbox

Receiving your promotional offers. It is unticked by default and the customer can create their card without touching it. That is what Canadian anti-spam law requires.

What this means for you in practice When you launch a promotion, it appears on every customer's card, but only those who ticked the second box receive a notification. So do not be surprised if the number of notifications sent is lower than your number of customers.
2

Their card opens immediately

For a stamp card or a points card, the card exists as soon as the form is submitted. The customer sees their counter, their reward and your business name.

They can bookmark the link, but the simplest is to add the card to their wallet: it will then be reachable without going through the browser.

For passes, it works differently The card is not created right away. The customer sees a waiting screen while you approve their request from your app, which is covered in chapter 7.

3

They add it to their wallet

Google Wallet on Android, Apple Wallet on iPhone. The card then joins their boarding passes and event tickets, in the place they instinctively check.

That is where your program stops being forgotten. A card in the phone wallet is found in two seconds, unlike a piece of cardboard at the bottom of a bag.

The chapter on wallets

What your customer can do on their own

Without writing to you, and without you having to do anything.

Find their card again

If they change phone, they rescan your code and enter the same number. Aster recognises the number and gives them back their card, stamps included.

Delete their data

A link on their own card lets them erase everything. It is their right, and Aster makes it visible rather than burying it in terms of service.

Stop receiving your offers

Consent to promotions can be withdrawn without losing the card or the stamps already collected. The two are independent.

Troubleshooting

What your customers will tell you

The messages they may see, and the answer to give at the counter.

This number already has an active card on this program

The customer is already signed up. They do not need to start over: Aster automatically redirects them to their existing card, stamps included.

Invalid phone number

The number entered does not look like a valid one. They can write it however they like, with or without dashes, spaces or country code, but it must be complete.

"I lost my card"

Impossible, and that is the whole point. It is tied to their phone number, not to the device. They rescan your code, enter the same number, and get it back.
